Carbohydrate Snacks for Endurance

If you have a physically demanding job that keeps you moving all day, you may have greater endurance if you eat small snacks throughout the day instead of having a single large meal at lunchtime. Researchers at the University of Montana in Missoula showed that snacking on carbohydrates may prolong your endurance during a long day of continuous movement (Medicine
& Science in Sports & Exercise, December 2007). They asked
men and women to exercise intermittently for ten hours. Each hour, they performed nine minutes of upper-body weight lifting, 19 minutes of cycling, and 20 minutes of walking on a treadmill, with a 1-minute rest between each exercise. This was followed by a 10-minute rest and feeding period. Those who took carbohydrates every hour were able to keep more sugar
(glycogen) in their muscles, and were able to exercise longer without feeling tired.
When you exercise, your muscles get their energy from muscle sugar and fat stored in muscles, sugar and fat from the bloodstream, and to a lesser degree from protein. When your muscles run out of their stored sugar, they require more oxygen to burn food for energy. This can make your muscles feel tired and be more difficult to coordinate. Eating any source of sugar or carbohydrates during exercise preserves muscle sugar and increases endurance.

Running/Jogging versus Other Cardio

I would someday like to race in a triathlon. I was hoping though that someone here could help me with a question I have always wondered about.

Swimming has always come easy for me. I also have no problem biking long distances. However running even a mile is very taxing on my body. I handle other cardio activities very well, but running always does a number on my heart and lungs.

My resting heart rate is 65 - I’m sure not great by standards here, but not bad. So I do not think cardio healht is the problem. I’ve also done a couple of various VO2 max tests and score well on those as well. So I don’t think it is my lungs. But it sure feels like both of these are the problem. Even running a mile at a 5 mph pace wipes me out.

My question is, am I doing something wrong? Why do other cardio activities come so easily and running is so hard? Am I just not doing it enough? I can go for periods without swimming or biking and get right back into it without the major stress on my body. What makes running different.

Hi from Brazil

USA Triathlon has a number of developmental programs in place to grow involvement in the sport at the youth and junior ranks, ranging from local clinics, sprint races for first-timers and regional skills camps to more competitive opportunities for those interested in competing at an advanced level.

The primary objective of the Junior National team is to provide the nation’s top performers with the support they need to successfully represent our country at international competitions and the ITU World Championships. These athletes specialize in draft- legal racing and are in the pipeline for potential careers as elite triathletes and to represent the United States at future Olympic Games.

To be considered for the 2008 Junior National team, athletes must be between the ages of 16-19 (as of December 31, 2008) and meet the eligibility criteria determined by USAT’s Sport Performance group. Traditionally this includes qualification to a prior ITU Triathlon World Championship, top-five finish at a major (Tier 1) Junior draft-legal race and/or meeting designated swim and run performance times. Candidates with strong draft-legal triathlon performances receive the most serious consideration. The selection process is quite competitive, as less than five athletes per gender are generally selected for the team.

Members of the Junior National team will represent the United States at USAT Junior Elite Cup races, the Pan American Junior Championships (April 19, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico) and other developmental races throughout the season.

The USAT Junior Elite Cup season kicks-off May 3 in Oklahoma City, Okla. The 2008 Junior ITU World Championships will be held June 7 in Vancouver, Canada. ALL Juniors are eligible for qualification to the team - the qualification process is available on the USAT website
